What? A robot in space?
Yes, to celebrate the launch of Ohbot 2.1, the world’s first easy-to-program robot head, we launched one 28km up into nearspace. Nearspace is a region of the stratosphere between 20 and 100 kilometres up, where the sky looks black, you would need a spacesuit to survive (it is above the Armstrong limit) and the temperature drops to a chilly -45 degrees C. It's fortunate we didn't send a human. Our astrOhbot, called 'Peaky' after Tim Peake was programmed to react as a robot astronaut, with fears about the cold, the balloon burst and surviving the return to Earth. Peaky also delivered 100 word messages to the humans of Earth, scripted by children and selected from over 900 entries. It took three launches to get Peaky working properly. The first took place from Roysia Middle School in Hertfordshire on 20th January 2017. |
